Bara Betina is an exhibition of comics presenting women as the subject in the creative process of making comics. Because although popular, most comics have a masculine nature in which the female figures usually appear as a side-kick who is not very significant. Even if comics have a main character who is female, usually they are limited to the romantic genre aimed at female readers.

Besides that, over the past two decades, the world of Indonesian comics has been dominated by comics from America, Europe, and Japan, even though, Indonesia experienced its own golden age of comics, especially in the 1960s and 70s. But, Indonesian comics are not dead. Many creators of comics continue to publish their work independently. Some have succeeded in breaking into the international market.

The exhibition created within the framework of the Two Month Women’s Program will present 14 artists actively creating comics for about the last ten years. A discussion on the development and challenges of comics and pictorial stories in Indonesia will be held on April 16 in Serambi Salihara.
